Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Scope of Position:

Originates and develops analysis methods to determine reliability of components, equipment and processes. Acquires and analyzes data. Prepares diagrams, charts, drawings, calculations and reports to define reliability problems and make recommendations for improvements. Conducts an analysis of reliability problems and investigates to determine the required reliability approach for the particular situation, with consideration given to cost limitations for equipment uptime/downtime, repair/replacement costs and weight, size and availability of materials/equipment. Determines cost advantages of alternatives and develops action plans that comply with internal/external customer demands for reliable processes/equipment to avoid failures.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Works under broad administrative instructions

• Provides in-house consulting activities to advise and counsel personnel on a variety of complicated processes/procedures, supported by detailed calculations and guided by cost-effective decisions and recommendations

• Plans, conducts and directs engineering research and development projects of major significance that are very complex in nature and require expert application of advanced engineering knowledge from several different fields; resolves difficult root cause failure analysis to prevent future failures

• Designs and develops new and unique engineering methods and procedures, special equipment, innovative test procedures and special analysis of failure techniques, and communicates these advanced concepts in detailed technical reports that are used in the supervision and education of lower level reliability engineers

• Represents the company at outside discussions and technical forums while working with a wide latitude for unreviewed actions and decisions expected from a seasoned engineer

• Follows company safety and health guidelines and other company policies

 

Travel Requirements:

Less than 5%, domestic travel

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

40 hours/week, occasional overtime

 

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in a technical discipline (prefer engineering, statistics, mathematics)

 

Required Years and Area of Experience: 5 - 7+ years of experience in engineering/manufacturing

 

Required Skills:

• Rigorous problem solving - Proficient in the use of DOE, SPC, Six Sigma and other process control/ analysis techniques

• Experience completing projects in a manufacturing organization

• Decision making based on data

 

Desired Skills:

• Effective presentation skills

• Capable of leading small process development / improvement projects

• Innovation experience

• Process excellence (Six Sigma) Green Belt or higher strongly preferred.
