Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of Position.

The Tooling Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the extrusion process by managing all aspects related to tooling. This includes assembling, inspecting, and maintaining tooling components to ensure they meet quality standards. By being responsible for these key functions, the Tooling Technician helps minimize downtime and optimize production efficiency while adhering to safety and quality protocols.

Major responsibilities and tasks of the position.

  • Tooling Assembly and Inspection: Assemble tooling accurately using a press and vision system to inspect parts thoroughly. Ensure all tools are complete and ready for use, maintaining replacement parts available in ovens.
  • Tooling Control and Inventory Management: Keep the tooling inventory database updated with new stock from various locations, such as engineering drawers or tool cribs. Complete tooling sets by line for replacements as needed.
  • Measurement and Evaluation of Tooling: Use analytical tools like microscopes and optical comparators to assess against drawings, check for wear or damage, and determine disposition of tooling.
  • Support and Problem Resolution: Install replacement tooling when issues arise as indicated by troubleshooting or engineering staff directives. Participate in root cause analysis when required, document findings, reset alarms, ensure downtime is reported correctly in DTS, and manage scrap disposal under engineering approval.
  • Reporting and Communication: Record findings during inspections; communicate abnormalities immediately to Engineering/MET that require attention; send reports promptly; maintain communication with other shift technicians for task follow-up or feedback on findings during shift handovers.

Required Skills

  • Technical or professional degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Industrial Processes, or Electronics Engineering.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience in manufacturing.

  • At least 2 years of experience in manufacturing engineering.

  • Experience in extrusion or molding line operation and tooling handling.

  • Ability to operate microscopes and optical comparators for precise measurements.

  • Accurate tracking of tooling stock levels across multiple locations.

  • Participation in root cause analysis (RCA) processes.

  • Technical skills in Power BI, Comet, Excel, SAP, and equipment software.

  • Problem-solving, attention to detail, and time management.

  • Effective verbal and written communication.

  • Collaboration with engineering teams and technicians.

  • Maintaining a safe and organized workspace.

  • Rotating shifts availability.

Desired

  • Associates or Bachelors Degree
  • Successful track record of performance in previous work experiences
  • 1-3 years work experience
  • English skills at 30% 
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and part numbers
  • Basic knowledge of inventory management principles
